Police Chief Search Process Revamped

Fairhope, Alabama

MORE COUNCIL INPUT

Modifying the plan described at a previous council meeting, Council President Burrell outlined the  procedure for screening the 60 applicants for police chief -- down to a list of 3 - 5 finalists.

Burrell said that after reviewing all the applications, each council member will then individually make a list of their 5 - 7 preferred applicants; then the lists will be compared. Next, a final list will be compiled of 3 - 5  names most-common to their individual lists and then in-public interviews conducted. The full city council will then vote to select  the next chief from the list of finalists during a council meeting -- by majority vote.

(The earlier plan -- discussed at the Dec. 5th council meeting (click) -- relied predominantly on the Mayor, Councilmen Boone and Mueller to screen the applicants down to finalists.)

Burrell: "We're each trying to narrow it down to a list of 5-7 people we feel would be a good police chief ... within the next few days ... once that's done, we're going to compare the lists ... if an applicant's on everybody's list ... there is a great likelihood that applicant will have an interview ... ."

Burrell added that some "politicking" may be necessary among individual council members to come up with the list of finalists.

Burrell: "We've got a lot of good applicants ... I'm confident ... whether we stay with Joe (Petties), or hire someone else ... we're going to have a good police chief for this city."

(Publisher's note; Campaign finance records indicate one new council member received a $100 contribution from one of the applicants: Steve Griffis.)
