 PARKING SHORTAGE CRITICAL

The planning commission approved the site plan for a much-needed additional 60 parking spaces on .84 acres of residentially-zoned property (R-4) on the south side of Thomas Hospital.

Parking is a permitted use for residential property in the medical overlay district; the lots are located  at the end of Northrup Street.

There will be no access from Northrup and a privacy fence and vegetative buffer will be constructed adjacent the residential property along the cul de sac.

NUMBER OF SPACES REDUCED

There was some confusion during the planning meeting about whether a ten foot wide vegetative buffer called for by the city's tree ordinance applied in the medical overlay district: the plan was approved without the 10'  buffer, but it was added later by the applicant; and the number of spaces reduced from 60 to 54, according to Planning Director Smith.

HMR is the engineer for the project.

The city council will still have to approve the plan.

I'm very happy that this was approved. Thomas Hospital works miracles for our community. Parking space availability has been an issue for a long time. I'm glad solutions are being sought, especially before the new birth center is constructed.

I'd say they are going to end up putting a 2 or 3 story parking garage.

They are deep in debt ... can not afford a deck .....

I don't see any shade trees...

City of Fairhope would not approve a deck years ago, but now they (F'hope) has one of them which no one uses. I've been told by many merchants, they use the deck, but a lot of customers don't even know it is there. Need better signage to direct people instead of those little bitty 8x10 plagues. But there again, might make F'hope look tacky.

Here we go again, more rumors with nothing to back it up.

In debt? Where are your pieces of evidence? Thomas Hospital is part of Infirmary health which operates several hospitals and clinics throughout Mobile and Baldwin counties. Infirmary Health is surely bringing in revenue. In addition, Thomas Hospital has raised millions of dollars for their birth center that is soon to come. A large portion of it was actually donated by the Thomas Hospital Auxiliary...that obviously says something.

The ignorance in the comments on this site are impressive for a supposed educated community. However, this community tends to reelect politicians with overt special interest. Makes me wonder are we ignorant, because we don't know, stupid, because we know but continue to reelect, or apathetic, because we are self-absorbed. I tend to believe we are a big fat sloppy mix of all 3 that just can't wait to football season so we can boast about something that we contributed nothing for the outcome.

Get off your fat tush and get involved in your community. Complaining on a community blog does not create change, hard work, focus on the goal and compassion for mankind creates change.

As long as our citizenry remains clueless and ignorant of the issues involved, no politician can save us: it's the mob rule the Republic's founders worried so about.
