Another Vintage Building to be Demolished

OBJECTS STORE

The building on Section St. most-recently occupied by Objects gift store is to be demolished and replaced with a two story mixed-use building (retail shops downstairs, apartments upstairs). The building has been vacant since about 2006 -- after hurricane Ivan passed through.

ORIGINALLY FAIRHOPE GARAGE

Built in 1924 by renown Fairhope family builder Dyson and Company, the Fairhope Garage (aka the Filling Station) was operated by Harold Ruge in its early years.

The building is in such disrepair after being vacant so long it can't practically be saved, according to local historian Donnie Barrett.



(The fire-damaged historic Magnet Theatre building on Fairhope Ave. at Church St. was demolished last year and the near-by Tumble Inn about 4 years ago.)

When did Donnie Barrett become a building inspector and make decisions concerning if a building should be torn down or not? He is a great story teller but building inspector....I think not. Maybe they should plant some berry bushes next to the building and then he would be for saving it. OK I will lighten up....tear it down and plant a digital clock tower.....

Can we turn this into the Kant Center. That way he will always be the OBJECT of our attention and be located in the middle of town. The front of the building could be planted in flowers with a secret rear exit when things get out of hand. It could include a free dental office for all of my fellow employees. One last thing...a reserved parking place out front for the employee who agrees with the Mayor the most. ( Maybe a couple of spaces)....

I agree. He was toxic. I have made a point of talking to a lot of police employees in the last few months. One told me he can't get the smile off his face since September. Press managed through fear. If he didn't like you, if you didn't feed that huge ego of his, he made your life hell. Many quit. They respect Chief Pettis.

I agree on the KANT center. But it needs underground secret tunnels so that he can make is way to the secret flower growing operation that is seven stories beneath the city. The had the US Government build this amazing structure with federal and city dollars during the re-construction of the museum. It covered all of the covert construction that was going on below. Its like a football field down there its so large.

Back to topic — I'm looking forward to more mixed use living downtown. People living in the downtown makes it a vibrant place. Remember the whiners said the Hampton inn would be a "monstrosity" that would "tower over" the rest of downtown? They were wrong. Downtown is a much better place with the hotel, and it will be better still with half a dozen condo units above the renewed Objects building.

I agree. There are a lot of good, exciting things going on in Fairhope right now. The possibility of the Triangle being preserved for us all, the other environmental projects envisioned by our Mayor and new Council. I haven't felt this hopeful about our community in a very long time. It's nice to feel this way again.

Been watching these comments as time permits...amazing how obvious people in this town do what they're told, like monitor this site and reply in Kant's favor...that building is an eyesore, but so was the museum which was the police station/city hall a very long time ago. Donnie is a nice guy, but he's also a kant yes man. he wants to keep his job. How he's qualified for this, only whoever told him he was knows for sure, but it is certain, he was told....
