According to a high ranking government employee, the city missed a prime opportunity several years ago when it decided to pass on purchasing a dirt pit for sale at the time on S. HWY 181 and using it for a new city landfill; because of objections from some well know local realtors/developers (among others) who are building an up-scale subdivision (Stone Creek) across the road.
Early last year the pit was converted to a private landfill anyway. City Official: "(Really) Its always been a landfill (un-zoned) . . . city could have installed a (landscaped) buffer there (trees along 181). . . missed a good opportunity."
It was just announced the city is having to raise some trash collection fees-- to pay for hauling certain debris all the way to the Magnolia Springs county landfill. [Most household garbage (foodstuff, etc.)--has already had to be hauled there for about the past 10 years.]
