FOR MONTROSE AND HAWTHORNE GLENN
A meeting was held earlier this week to consider organizing community watch programs in Fairhope neighborhoods.
Montrose resident and city Councilmember Debbie Quinn organized the meeting and Assistant Police Chief Sanders, Sergeants Davis and King helped explain the programs.
Quinn said Montrose had one years ago but since thieves seem to be getting bolder now it may need to be revived. She said Rock Creek and Hawthorne Glenn Subdivisions had expressed interest as well.
Chief Sanders said he had helped organize CW's in other places he's worked -- but urged all residents to keep car and house doors locked as a primary deterrent.
Sanders cited the steps involved:
1. define its boundaries
2. choose the type and put up street signs
3. name a coordinator
4. choose a block captain
5. choose a place for meetings
6. organize neighborhood patrols if necessary
Sanders said all the steps necessary may not be necessary, depending on the threat level.
Detective King said most thefts occurring in the area are from unlocked cars, and said his own daughter had electronics stolen after leaving car doors unlocked in their driveway.
Some attending residents from Montrose and Hawthorne Glenn said they were interested in moving forward -- and were going to coordinate their efforts with Quinn and Sanders.
