2012 Budget Approved by Fairhope Council

SUBMITTED BY BUDGET COMMITTEE

The city council approved the fiscal year 2012 budget, which was presented to it by  Budget Committee Chairman Stan Grubin.

Councilman Stankoski called the new budget "conservative and realistic in recessionary times."

Councilman Kingrea complimented Department Heads, the mayor and his staff for their hard work; and added: "We need to be like any good family ... watch how the money's coming in ... going out."

Council President Mixon said the city was lucky to have so much public participation: "The city gains tremendously having so much input from its citizens."

Councilwoman Quinn agreed: "... 8 meetings take a lot of time. I appreciate what they've done."

The 2012 Budget Committee members were Grubin, Mixon, Mayor Kant, Chuck Zunk, and Gail Gardner.

EMPLOYEE PAY DECISION DELAYED

While enough money was budgeted for up to a 2% across the board pay increase (or bonus) for employees, the council delayed that decision until the pay study now underway is completed. The study is to compare Fairhope's pay scales with those of neighboring cities. The study will also include job descriptions; and is expected to be completed in October.

(Publisher's note: The Federal Government is projecting a 1.5 % increase for Social Security recipients next year.)

HEALTH BENEFITS TO REMAIN THE SAME

The budget includes a change in the way employee health insurance is funded (change to partially self-insured); but no change to benefits or costs for employees. The change is projected to save taxpayers about $300,000 this year.
