Personnel Board Holds Regular Meeting

Fairhope, Alabama

REVISED MISSION STATEMENT DISCUSSED

The Fairhope Personnel Board held its regularly scheduled meeting Thursday to discuss administrative matters involving scheduling, a revised mission statement, and other housekeeping matters.

Chairman Lorenzo Howard said he thought the Board needed an updated mission statement and asked members for suggestions: "why we exist" and "what our role should be."

Some suggestions were:

1. be honest brokers in personnel matters.
2. operate in a timely and professional manner
3. give feedback to management (critique)
4. be consistent in policy matters
5. act as an alternative to unionization

Council liaison Mixon and other members agreed it was imperative for employees to have such a Board to serve as a neutral third party arbiter -- outside of the usual chain of command consisting of only senior city employees (supervisors).

SALARY/JOB CLASSIFICATION STUDY ONGOING

Members reported the study commissioned last year by the Council to study salaries/job classifications of city workers (and compare them with other cities) was ongoing; meetings were still being held with supervisors to streamline/adjust job descriptions.

Other sources familiar with the study say it found that the pay here is generally comparable to neighboring cities;  no adjustments are being contemplated (except a few possibly upward).

(Publisher's Note: Howard said there are currently no termination appeal hearings scheduled, but "four or five" are imminent.)
