Construction Begins On New Bus Station

Fairhope, Alabama

USING FEDERAL STIMULUS MONEY

Ground was broken recently on the new BRATS transit hub on Fairhope Ave. across from the Piggly Wiggly grocery store.

The $200,000 Baldwin County project is mostly funded by the Federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, commonly called the "stimulus" package.

The city of Fairhope agreed to reimburse the county for the cost of leasing the property for 20 years at the rate of $2000/month.

The facility will include parking for buses/passengers, restrooms and a security office. A new exit will be added in the rear to give access from Lottie Lane.

(The city also agreed to take over maintenance of the large "Winn Dixie" drainage basin off of Morphy Ave., to collect drainage from the site.)

County Commissioner Bob James told the Times he expects the facility will be open by January 2013.
