Fairhope, Alabama
COUNCIL CERTIFIES ELECTION RESULTS
After the city clerk opened and counted provisional ballots, the city council certified the results of the municipal election this morning. Of 34 provisional votes cast, only 10 were approved by the Board of Registrars as legitimate.
Mayor Kant received 7 additional votes; Mixon and Warner 1 each: Burell 5; Muellar 4; McPherson 4; Ford 3; Boone 4; Quinn 3; Stankoski 5; Brady 4; Kingrea 5; Brewer 5.
WARNER SEEKING RECOUNT
According to a letter provided by city clerk Lisa Hanks, Chris Warner, who officially finished third in the Mayoral contest, is asking for a recount. Such requests must be made within 48 hours after the election's certification.
The reasons cited by Warner:
1. Election results were inconsistent with a scientific opinion survey
2. Past elections results have appeared questionable and inconsistent
Warner also requested the ballots be hand-counted -- but city clerk Hanks said Alabama law does not require that (machine count ok).
According to election law, Warner will be required to pay for the cost of the recount, about $4,100 according to Hanks. The council passed a resolution requiring the money ($4,100) be put up (bond, etc.) before the recount may begin.
