Mayor Asks Council to Support School Tax Renewal

Fairhope, Alabama

Mayor Kant asked the city council to support Amendment 2 for the renewal of the one cent county sales tax for Baldwin County Schools.

Kant: " ... a number of neighboring cities have passed resolutions ... I'd like to see our city support a continued tax for schools ... ."

Council President Mixon agreed to add it to the agenda for the next council meeting.

The referendum to renew it will be Nov. 6th -- the same day as the Presidential election.

The cities of Daphne and Foley have passed similar resolutions supporting the tax.

The Baldwin County Education Coalition has a website promoting the Amendment (here).

(Note: The proposal for the city to supplement local schools with up to $750,000 may be addressed by the Mayor and new city council after they take office on Nov. 1st.)

I understand that municipal elected officials are not affiliated with any particular party, however; most of these guys claim to be Republican. There is nothing about tax and spend that is conservative and there is no end in sight if they are not made to cut back. What planning was done to make cuts when they all knew this tax was going to sunset?

I don't trust the Board of Education's math.

They didn't make the plans after it passed 3 years ago because they knew then it wasn't "temporary." Once the government gets a source of revenue, they will NOT give it up. That's why people are nuts to vote a tax on themselves. Somehow the school system has money to send teachers over to New Orleans to stay at the Ritz Carlton this past summer...there's money for free computers...but hey, if you don't extend the tax, the entire educational system will fail apparently. Alan Lee's sole job description is apparently "tax pimp." That's all he does...well, that and padding his resume with his "digital renaissance." Instead of constantly wanting new taxes and getting teachers to basically "strong arm" parents into voting for it...maybe support electing a president that will actually get the economy GROWING again, thereby increasing revenues from taxes already on the books. And people need to know...if they vote for this 5 year extension on the penny tax now, it's permanent. It's a done deal. After the 5 years is up, the legislature will extend it again...it doesn't get another vote people. I have kids in the school system...I love education, but I don't love throwing money down a hole and thinking I'm wonderful for "doing it for the children."

The average Alabama resident doesn't care about education. You'll never get their attention until they eliminate football.
