RV Mardi Gras Camping To Continue For Now

NEIGHBORS COMPLAINING

After a lengthy discussion, the city council decided to continue allowing RV camping during Mardi Gras in the parking lot behind the library for another season.

Police chef Holinghead said the area was needed for additional handicapped parking ... and that there have been complaints about open fires, noise, drinking and other problems from neighbors.

The council decided there was no time to make changes this season; the charge is $50/day. 

Mayor Sullivan said another place could be made available next time.

This is yet another fine example where some irresponsible knuckleheads ruin it for others. Seems like there were plenty of good reasons not to allow the RV parking. Where do these folks dump their sewer? Street gutters?

"The council decided there was no time to make changes this season" If this problem was known prior to last year's Mardi Gras, why did the council wait until the last minute to bring this subject up? If anything, they should have acted and reserved this for handicapped parking instead of $200,000 plus motorhomes.

If it lowers property taxes through alternative revenue, I'm for it; however, I believe that our Police Chief is on top of everything and, if she says that it is needed for handicapped parking, I agree with her always. Clearly, someone on the CC has RV friends?
Imho, it is irresponsible for the CC to disagree with the one that is responsible for public safety and security during this very busy time.
