Council Passes 2010 Budget

After hearing a presentation by Financial Advisory Committee Chairman Chuck Zunk, the Council approved the budget his Committtee's been working on for about 2 months-- without modifications by a 4-1 vote. Councilman Mike Ford voted no-- primarily because the Mayor's proposed across-the-board 3% employee COLA (cost of living adjustment) --or at least a 2% one-- were not included. Council President Quinn said she did favor some limited merit raises to "give people incentive to . . . do . . . good work;" and thought that may still be possible at some point down the road. The overhead projector Zunk was attempting to use proved to be inoperable--as it has been intermittently for several months now. Publisher's Note: According to the Federal Government, the cost of living actually declined slightly this past year: hence no Social Security increases for Seniors(COLA).

Since the cost of living has gone down , employee pay ought to decrease, right? Am i missing something?

why would Quinn even consider merit raises, they only go to the higher up supervisors.

According to statements made at the meeting, merit raises (raises based on good performance) can go to any employee--hourly or salaried--and should be given by Departments Heads.

this council has made great strides towards a reality check. good job, monday. problems: 1. continuing to fund employee insurance after retirement until reach age of medicare 2. continuing employee freebees 3. the secret purchase of the land...$900K with Ford in charge ready to close on Thurs? No appraisal? all done behind closed doors. who does it belong to? What's in it for Mike? Another $400K windfall like last summer with the courthouse pkng. lot expansion? Criminal? ethical? huge problem.....

246 full time employees, about 300 total for a city of 16,500??? I know we run a municipal utility, but frankly, there are too many employees, period.
