Mayor Proposes Building Out-Of-Town Sidewalk

At Monday's Council meeting, Mayor Kant proposed spending $26,000 to build a sidewalk outside the city limits on Young Street-- in the largely African American Community south of town. Kant said he had met with a group of "concerned citizens" from the neighborhood (ACT 2) who are requesting the project and he thought it would be "money well spent." Although County Commissioner David Bishop intends to apply for grant money for the same project, Kant wants the City to pay for it instead--and use construction workers already in the area working on the Twin Beech Rd. sidewalk to do the job as soon as possible. Kant: "We're asking people down there to annex into the city . . .they're asking us for simple things . . . would be a good gesture . . . to show we . . . want to make the whole area whole." According to other officials, the city's longtime policy of constructing a mile of sidewalks a year inside the city limits had to be terminated about 5 years ago-- due to lack of funding.

That doesn't make sense to me. If we want people to annex into the City and pay full city taxes, you don't go out there and build them a sidewalk BEFORE they do so. No incentive.

Citizens of Fairhope don't owe those people anything. They are the county's responsibility until they annex in.

We need our leaders to be smarter with our money.

That's just not right. We've been begging for a sidewalk down Volanta so the kids could get to the park for years now, someon'es gong to be hurt. We were told sidewalks are planned all over town but there's no money for them. Why do the special interest group go tho the head of the line? Lets take care of our own first.

i thought they were going to form their own city down there so we wouldn't have to be bothered any more

Tim's reaching out for every vote he can get, even now. When he first ran for Mayor, he actually went down to Twin Beach with fried chicken and orange soda....swear to goodness this is true.....building sidewalks for nothing...not a good idea...there needs to be a plan to bring these folks into the city, if that's what they want, but what they also expect is all the amenities over night. There needs to be a plan in place, do things over time. Kids need sidewalks to walk to school, Highway 98 (Greeno) is a death trap with sidewalks near the municipal complex N of Volanta...this is vote buying.

He needs to come out and look at Morphy Ave east of Greeno. We need a sidewalk so the kids can get to school. Along Bishop Rd. too. He needs to start building a mile every year agin inside the city.

if they don't live in town technically they aren't "citizens" (of Fairhope) Is Kant Mayor of the whole County now too?
