At Monday's Council meeting, Mayor Kant proposed spending $26,000 to build a sidewalk outside the city limits on Young Street-- in the largely African American Community south of town.
Kant said he had met with a group of "concerned citizens" from the neighborhood (ACT 2) who are requesting the project and he thought it would be "money well spent." Although County Commissioner David Bishop intends to apply for grant money for the same project, Kant wants the City to pay for it instead--and use construction workers already in the area working on the Twin Beech Rd. sidewalk to do the job as soon as possible.
Kant: "We're asking people down there to annex into the city . . .they're asking us for simple things . . . would be a good gesture . . . to show we . . . want to make the whole area whole."
According to other officials, the city's longtime policy of constructing a mile of sidewalks a year inside the city limits had to be terminated about 5 years ago-- due to lack of funding.

Citizens of Fairhope don't owe those people anything. They are the county's responsibility until they annex in.
We need our leaders to be smarter with our money.
