In a statement released Saturday, Councilman Dan Stankoski urges action on Dr. Harvey's report:
"The city has spent $25,000 for the school study. The report is paid for. It would be fiscally irresponsible to put it aside and not use it. Since the education of our children is an important issue, we should captilize on the momentum and get more input regarding pros and cons from those in the corporate limits and those outside. If we decide not to have a city system, discussion of education may lead to some ideas for improving our existing system. The situation is not going to get better and with additional proration will get worse. We can not ignore the problem. The goal is to do what is best for the students and taxpayers."

If its non-binding and doesn't cost us anything (except maybe travel expenses to Montgomery) why not go ahead and appoint a school board? Better safe than sorry.
Fact is, it doesn't really matter what those living outside the city limits think. If they want to call themselves Fairhopers, they can just annex in (pay full taxes).
Things have changed dramatically since the study was initiated: 2 new schools adding tens of millions a City school board would be responsbile for, and the economy has gotten even worse for everyone. My wife and I discussed what we would do if things tank with the BCBE (and they more than likely will from the BCBE employees I know and talk to). I predict enrollment at Bayshore Christian and the Organic School will soar if things continue on the same track.
Sorry but a City School system will never get enough votes for a property tax increase. Too many people struggling and too many retirees with no kids in the system to get the votes necessary. If fact, I dont think it would even be close.
We, too, will fight tooth and nail. I'm not bussing my kids to Foley.
