Airport Vocational School Gets Go Ahead

Fairhope, Alabama

'THE ACADEMY AT FAIRHOPE'

At its last meeting, the Baldwin County School Board voted to authorize Superintendent Alan Lee to approve a lease agreement with the Fairhope Airport Authority that will allow construction of the school building to begin.

At its August meeting, the Airport Authority also passed a resolution approving the lease agreement. Both Superintendent Lee and Authority Chairman Zunk were authorized to make any minor changes that may become necessary.

The authority will own the building and lease it back to the Board of Education.

The School Board simultaneously approved agreements with Faulkner State and Enterprise community colleges to provide courses of instruction in industrial maintenance, welding and other technical aviation skills there.

CONSTRUCTION FINANCED BY SCHOOL BOARD

Rather than use more conventional financing, the School Board decided to pay the Authority the $2.7 million needed in an up front lease payment.

Zunk: "... the idea agreed to ... they will pay us up front the $2.7 million for the school... . Until we get the money in our hands we will not sign the construction agreement."

COMPLETION DELAYED

First scheduled to open by January of next year, plans are now to have it completed by next June, in time for the Fall 2014 school term. A 56 space parking lot will also be built adjacent to the building.

Anticipating high demand, a strong possibility exists that additional buildings will need to be added for more classrooms, according to Zunk.
