Less Dredging Needed Than First Thought

Fairhope, Alabama

FLY CREEK MARINA

After checking water depths, the Army Corps of Engineers determined that only the entrance to the channel was in need of dredging, the basin itself measured 7'.

Mayor Kant: "When the article went in the paper (about the need for dredging)  ... it was amazing ... that same week ... the Corps came out and actually took measurements ... to let us know exactly where the problems were. Its not as bad as we thought.""

Kant said he was going to meet later in the week with the Corps engineers to see what they "are or aren't going to do."

About 3 weeks ago, he had estimated dredging the channel could cost anywhere form $20- 500K.

Kant: "As of now what doesn't comply with their specifications is a little area ... some 15' coming in to the north side of the channel."

"Its not going to be as expensive as everybody thought originally."
