HWY 98 CULVERT DAMAGING CREEK
In his recent state of the city address, Mayor Kant said the culvert for Fly Creek under Hwy 98 north of town needs to be rebuilt to establish hydraulic and biological connectivity between sections of Fly Creek that are now cut off from one another.
As it is now, the structure blocks aquatic organisms and wildlife from migrating past the structure (mullet, etc.).
Stream hydrology can also be affected by the change in height, according to web-sources.
Kant said that it probably has little effect on sedimentation problems in the creek; but some kind of filters could be installed as well to clean runoff from the highway.
He said that environmental issues were not a major concern when the roadway was designed back in the 1970s; the solution would most likely involve restoring the original stream-bed level under the highway.
Council President Burrell said he hopes this project can be funded with grants as part of the overall Fly Creek Watershed Preservation project.
Discussions are underway with the Department of Transportation as well.
