"Accessory Dwelling Units" considered by Planning Commission

A new ordinance allowing homeowners who live on their property to construct an "acccessory dwelling unit"--for rental purposes--was discussed at the last Planning and Zoning meeting. The ordinance, for R1, R2, R3 lots, would allow rental income for the owners, according to Planning Director Smith; and is not intended for short term rentals. Chairman Wilson added adding rental units--limited to no more than 25% of rear yards-- on existing lots would "promote more affordable housing." The matter is to come back before the Planning Commission for a final vote, then to City Council for adoption.
