Fairhope to Form Its Own School System?

A Group of residents has asked the Mayor/City Council for $25,000 to fund a study to determine the feasibility of the City forming its own School System. Councilman Ford: "One was done years ago . . . found out taxes would have to be doubled or tripled."

Gulf Shores / Orange Beach tried and failed. Let's move on. Nothing to see here.

Guess this is Bob Callahan's foot in the door to run for Mayor....he wants to bring integrity back to our fair city.
I can't think of a better platform than using the kids. We can all look forward to more consultants and taxes (taxes targeted for the Fairhope School System).

Fairhope is all new money pretentiousness. Wannabe spring hill with faux class.

There is no doubt an eliteness attitude towards those not living in the city limits. Besides Newton, there are students in the other Fairhope schools that don't techincally live in the city limits. These are the same people who pay some Fairhope utilities, who bascially support the local Fairhope economy, sports etc.. There will be a number of families-students who are rooted in the system that would be excluded as not every area would be annexxed. People need to be educated about what is happening and let their voices be heard. Creating a Fairhope school system, cutting out a number of existing students is not going to make Fairhope some utopia where budget problems don't happen, the money issues are far reaching. Property taxes go up & some people won't be able to pay them plus losing the support in the local economy of all the people they decide not to include. If some individuals don't like the system, move your children to private or help the county as a whole OR guarantee that every child in the system today will be included in the new system.

Did we really pay 25,000.00 to get this study done? I am assuming that’s on top of the 150,000.00 the city pays a year on flowers? That’s amazing Ill give them my opinion for free!!! First of all let me say that we love living in Fairhope (or where we use to consider Fairhope.) When we bought our house we made sure it was in the 36532 zip code and the Fairhope school district. We have always been extremely active in the community as well as proud of our hometown. Now someone is going to tell us it was all for nothing and that our children might have to go to Foley or Daphne? Or that when we voted for the 1-cent sale tax for the schools it was done under false pretenses? We have had 2 children graduate from Fairhope High School already and we have 2 more currently in Newton School Who are fearing that the city is going to turn there back on them. I’m still taken aback that Fairhope will accept my utility check every month but is debating about educating my children. If our children are not allowed to attend Fairhope schools any longer I will personally get on a soapbox urging all families in our predicament to boycott all shops and stores within the Fairhope City limits!!! After all if our children aren’t accepted in Fairhope why should our money be spent there? In fact Ill be the first person in my yard digging a private well and having my city water turned off!!! In addition I will pay for and give away the first 250 t shirts that read
