Councilman Warns: Increased Scrutiny Coming for Donations

At the last Council Meeting(Sept. 28th) --after approving the dispersement of "community development" funds previously pledged to the Chamber of Commerce ($35K), Ecumenical Minisitries ($10K), the Economic Development Alliance, et. al.-- Finance Committee Chairman Lonnie Mixon cautioned: "We're going to . . . have to . . . start looking (harder) at these donations . . . we just put in a (sales) tax . . . list seems to get longer and longer each year . . . people keep coming with their hands out . . . $10K, $20K and so forth . . . it all adds up . . . want to alert everyone in the city . . . when you do come with hands out . . . better have some good justification . . . (we're) not going to arbitrarily donate funds (anymore) . . . just because we get a letter requesting it . . . " Councilman Kingrea: "Where does the money come from to pay these." Mayor Kant: " . . . all these are paid not with tax dollars . . . comes out of revenues from utilities . . . " $325,000 has been set aside in the 2010 budget for such purposes.

who keeps track of "donations" to city for projects like the median on section st? i was told that's how it was paid for and the trees were left over from shellbrook (kingrea represented shellbrook, by the way)...who would simply donate to city, how is money accounted for and is this actually true? Hope Mixon is not a l term guy like he says. Taxpayers are sick and tired of being milked when it's hard to even buy milk anymore....

Those who think its ok to keep raising our utility bills higher and higher, because its not called taxes, to help pay for these things are nuts and ought to have their heads examined.

utility rates are dropping all over the country, but bet we'll have an increase. We pay a consultant in Florida to determine how much is needed to meet the utility budget, (fuel adjustment surcharge, implemented when Tim became mayor). Municipal utilities in AL are not subject to the rules of the public service commission nor the federal laws that state cost can only be the amount from seller to buyer..go figure.
