Courthouse Oak Tree Removal Explained

According to the minutes of the September Tree Committee meeting--the recent (Saturday morning) removal of another mature oak tree (on the north side of Fairhope Ave., just west of the courthouse) was ordered by the Mayor (over the objections of the Committee and City Horticulturist Fidler). When plans for the courthouse/parking lot expansion (currently underway) were being reviewed, the Planning Commission had specifically asked the County Engineer and Commissioner Bishop to spare the tree as well. According to statements made at that meeting by County Commissioner Bishop, the Mayor plans to eventually remove all the oak trees on that side of the road (except for the one live oak).

So what. We can't let the liberal tree huggers hold up progress. It will make good fire wood.
