Highway Official Updates Construction Projects

ALDOT's Vince Calametti gave an update on several local road related projects at the last Council Meeting: 1. Highway 181 is being 4(5) laned in a 4 phase project: a. Phase one, from HWY90-CR64 is currently underway: to be completed by Spring 2010. b. The plans for Phase 2, from CR64-HWY104, are about 50% complete; and right of way acquisition is set to begin in 6 months (construction begins in FY 2013). c. Plans for Phase 3, from HWY104-CR32, are 65% complete; but right-of-way purchase has not yet been authorized. d. Plans for Phase 4, from CR32-HWY98, are 75% complete: right-of-way purchase not approved(funded). [Calametti added he is lobbying for bike lanes the whole way (under intense pressure from the "Smart Coast" group)--and expected them to be included] 2. The "Winn Dixie" Retention Pond (off Morphy Ave. in Fairhope) "takes a lot of water off HWY98 and is "in need of repairs." Calametti said he anticipates a request from the City for "in-kind" funding from ALDOT--and plans to work to obtain it (funding) from the "central office" when that occurs. The owners of the Baldwin Square Shopping Center have offered to give the basin to the city-- if it agrees to make repairs/take over maintenance. 3. Construction on the CR13/I-10 interchange has been delayed (for at least 8 months)--because of the county's plans for a new service road on the north side of the freeway (and required amendments to "environmental documents").
