The County Commission is set to enable a zoning referendum for residents in Planning District 14, generally east of HWY 181, to be held within 3 months.
If approved, District 14 residents will form a citizen's committee to establish how property in the district is zoned (what uses permitted) in public meetings.
Generally speaking, such zoning referendums have usually pit longtime large landowners, developers, land speculators (primarily interested in maximizing their land's profit potential) against homeowners (mostly of new subdivisions, seeking to protect their investments/neighborhoods from undesirable future development).
Planning District 17, south of Fairhope, will likely become the final area on the Eastern Shore to eventually adopt land use zoning.
****Update: On Jan 20th , after a motion to table (postpone) the decision for 90 days (by Com. Bishop) failed, the Commission approved the zoning referendum by a 3-1 vote.
