Despite some media reports that the issue had been settled (it was reported the escorts would continue as usual until this Oct.)-- the Times has learned the matter is still undecided; and Chief Press sent out a letter earlier this week re-affirming his position that he has insufficient manpower, the practice is dangerous for officers/citizens and a liability for the city. Press
has said he wants to provide only one police car as a show of respect ("final salute") for residents--but only to supplement private sector escorts.
[Informed sources suggest many of the funerals are for non-city-residents anyway; and wonder if even one police car is always necessary.]
Recent
national media reports seem to verify Press's concerns.
The issue is on the agenda for the next Council meeting (this Monday, 6PM).
