Councilman Issues Statement on School Study

In a statement released Saturday, Councilman Dan Stankoski urges action on Dr. Harvey's report:

"The city has spent $25,000 for the school study. The report is paid for. It would be fiscally irresponsible to put it aside and not use it. Since the education of our children is an important issue, we should captilize on the momentum and get more input regarding pros and cons from those in the corporate limits and those outside. If we decide not to have a city system, discussion of education may lead to some ideas for improving our existing system. The situation is not going to get better and with additional proration will get worse. We can not ignore the problem. The goal is to do what is best for the students and taxpayers."

I agree that we need to look into further ways to improve the school system in Fairhope but not to pay out any more money to an outsider

How did the Newton School wind up way down there by itself in the boondocks anyway? Some kind of political payoff? A bad decision in hindsight. Schools need to be near the most kids. Can it be put into mothballs and the kids come to Fairhope? We have excessive buildings here.

If its non-binding and doesn't cost us anything (except maybe travel expenses to Montgomery) why not go ahead and appoint a school board? Better safe than sorry.

Fact is, it doesn't really matter what those living outside the city limits think. If they want to call themselves Fairhopers, they can just annex in (pay full taxes).

This whole thing is just a big waste of our time and money.

It actually does matter what people outside the corporate limits think. I'm 3rd generation born and raised fairhope high graduate. We are a farming family outside of the city limits. I'll be damned of a panel of transplants tell me my kids can't go to Fairhope like the rest of us did. Our family has contributed more to Fairhope over the last 60 years, than most of these "holier than thou" advocates wanting to lock us out from the schools. There will be one hell of a fight comming. Rest assured.

Regardless of what they do the Council can't win this one- if they appoint a school board then they will be accused of catering to a small group of people who are pushing this issue and ignoring everyone else. If they do nothing they will infuriate the folks who have pushed this issue so hard.

Things have changed dramatically since the study was initiated: 2 new schools adding tens of millions a City school board would be responsbile for, and the economy has gotten even worse for everyone. My wife and I discussed what we would do if things tank with the BCBE (and they more than likely will from the BCBE employees I know and talk to). I predict enrollment at Bayshore Christian and the Organic School will soar if things continue on the same track.

Sorry but a City School system will never get enough votes for a property tax increase. Too many people struggling and too many retirees with no kids in the system to get the votes necessary. If fact, I dont think it would even be close.

Well said, we're just out of the city limits on Single Tax Colony land w/ Fairhope utilities.

We, too, will fight tooth and nail. I'm not bussing my kids to Foley.

What arrogance. Not only do we MATTER, we matter the most. LOL at "who cares what they think", what a smug mentality. hahah. A lot of people care what we think, you dunderhead.
