Council Fails to Endorse So Called "Rain Tax"

At Monday's  meeting, the City Council unanimously failed to endorse the storm water management amendment on the Nov. 2nd ballot (Amendment 1). Councilman Kingrea  objected to the fee structure being proposed--and Stankoski said existing agencies, ADEM and the EPA, were the proper funding sources.

Several Fairhope residents are members of the Coalition proposing to form a public storm water management corporation and enact  storm water management fees (Amendment 1) based on the amount of hard surface area per lot. The average fee per year was estimated to be about $30.

Mayor Kant is on the steering committee and Planning Commissioner Dick Charles, Jim Hoerner, Ron Heveran, and Patrick Waller are also involved.

Some drainage projects mentioned for Fairhope include improvements to Big Mouth Gully ($500K), the Winn Dixie drainage basin ($500K), and a catch basin near the Woodlands subdivision (Fly Creek).

A group has been formed to oppose what they call a "rain tax."

Good intentions and a worthy endeavor, but absolutely the wrong time to propose a tax increase. And yes, I know it is technically a "fee", but if you have no choice but to pay it and it's tied to your personal property then it is a TAX.

I am amazed at how many people just do not understand how bad folks are struggling out there. Most I know haven't had a raise in 2 -3 years and a lot of them have actually lost thier jobs. However everything else (insurance, utilities, gorceries, school fees, etc) are going up. As they say, timing is everything...and the timing on this could not be worse.

If only they would enact a Stupidity Tax...politicians could then fund their own projects.
