Could County Students Attend a Fairhope School System?

Larry Newton School
Dr Ira Harvey answered that a city system would be for residents only, but the two school boards (Fairhope's, Baldwin County's)  could negotiate to allow all or some of the out-of-towners in (numbering  about 1400).

Another alternative for county residents would be to ask to be annexed into the city. City Planner Johnathan Smith described their options:

The BCBE will never negotiate to lose even more students from Fairhope is this goes through, so they can say its an option but thats just lip service.

Annexation is possible, but anyone who wants to annex has to be contiguous (sp?) to the City in order to annex unless its by a specific act of the State Legislature. The vast majority of those that live south of town and have kids at Newton are too far away from any point of the City limits for this to be an option.

Call it what you want, but the ultimate result of a City school system is exclusion of almost half the current students. Meanwhile the system will pay for 4 schools designed for double what the occupancy will be.
