Fairhope Mayor Wants to Keep Transport Van Despite Low Usage

Mayor Kant objected to the City Council's plan to discontinue the city's seniors' transport bus service and auction off the van.

Recreation Director Sullivan had suggested discontinuing the bus service at Budget Committee meetings earlier this year--because of low ridership (only 5 per year), high cost ($30K/ yr.  for driver, gas, etc.) ; and the county provides a duplicate service (BRATS).

Sullivan said she is now using a car to provide the same service.

Due to tight finances, the  Committee had sought such cost-cutting suggestions from all City Departments earlier in the year.

Sullivan also recommended canceling the downtown New Year's Eve Celebration due to past low participation/high cost to the city. (The Mayor also opposed this cancellation)

[Publisher's Note: The Mayor is predicting a 10% electric rate hike will be needed next Spring.]

Im glad somebody's trying to cut back. Just rasing utility rates isn't a solution to every problem that comes along.
