Dr. Harvey said the city would need to raise about another $2 million/yr. -- due largely to the debt owed on the numerous new county school buildings within the city limits.
Harvey said cities in Alabama (unlike counties) have more revenue raising authority ("home rule"); and many sources of additional revenue may be tapped such as property, sales, gasoline, lodging, excise, privilege license, alcohol, or tobacco taxes. "It's up o the imagination of city leaders."
Harvey: " . . . additional revenue is needed because of the excessive debt burden (the city would inherit) . . . compared to other systems (per student)."

Talk about empire building...start a school system and watch people fight tooth and nail over our tax dollars. Even if we start our own system, who says the people wanting this so badly can do it any better? 2 million won't even scratch the surface if they want to fund IB, Arts and elective programs in addition to a basic school system!
