Fairhope's Historic Bay Break Grocery Goes Broke

BP OIL SPILL A FACTOR
Bay Break

Despite community fundraising efforts, the historic Bay Break Grocery on Mobile Street has gone out of business according to an adjacent business owner.

A more conventional convenience store is planning to open there later this year, but it will have another name.

The store dates from the 1930s when it was called Monk Green's according to a neighbor. It was severely damaged in 2008 by fire. Another historic building, downtown's  Magnet Theater, was also damaged by an early morning fire late last year.

Shocking it didn't make it considering it looks like a dump.

There's something to be said for dumps vs the usual same-as-everywhere corporate takeover
