A group of citizens, concerned about the rapid destruction of vintage structures here, is asking the city council to consider establishing a Historic Preservation Commission.

Preservation Committee member Ralph Thayer was one of those who recently addressed the council requesting it consider establishing a Historic Commission as a first step.

Thayer characterized the effort as not an "attack on property rights;"  but rather it was "good for business."

Thayer: " (It)  . . . brings people to a community . . . (promotes) domestic tourism."

Thayer went on to say there were federal funds available to help, as well as grants from private foundations, but nothing could be done until the effort was begun by local government.
