Troop 8442 |
Members of Troop 8442 told the City Council they had conducted an audit of pedestrian safety issues at Fairhope intersections on Jan 8th; and found that although it is Alabama law (Sec. 32-5A-211), most drivers here don't yield to pedestrians in crosswalks as required.
FOUND IT DANGEROUS TO CROSS FAIRHOPE STEETS
The scouts said they learned statistics say the Mobile Bay area is the most dangerous in the state for pedestrians -- and fourth most in the nation: "Drivers here are not mindful of pedestrians."
ASKING DRIVERS TO PLEDGE TO OBEY LAW
The Troop said they had begun a PR campaign (called "Step by Step") to raise driver awareness and asked all Fairhope drivers to take their pledge, to yield to pedestrians, by signing their petition (300 signatures so far). A brochure is to be placed at the Welcome Center as well.
YIELD TO PEDESTRIAN SIGNS REQUESTED
The Troop also asked that pedestrian warning signs be installed at various intersections around town as well. Fairhope would be the first town in south Alabama to do so.
COUNCIL PASSED RESOLUTION
The City Council unanimously passed a resolution "supporting the new safety measures to place yield signs at crosswalks based on Troop 8442's audit and encourages drivers to take the pledge to yield to pedestrians in city crosswalks."
