Reduction of Faihope's Police Jurisdiction Discussed

 MORE OFFICERS MAY BE NEEDED

Before its last meeting,  the city council discussed police department needs for patrolling the city and its police jurisdiction.

A recent rash of burglaries in Montrose highlighted the problem.

Council President Mixon: "this . . . deserves discussion . . . how much it costs . . . manpower it takes."

Mr. Ford said he resisted the idea of reducing the jurisdiction: " . . .  its  been a good relationship over the years  . . .  shouldn't be taken lightly just because of  money . . . can't judge just by money."

Mrs. Quinn said the city's ratio of  2 officers/1000 citizens was one of the state's highest but, "problem is when we have to take in the 88 sq. mile jurisdiction . . . spread too thin."

Mixon: ". . . (lets)  look at how many more officers,  cars we need . . . to have the proper ratio."

CHIEF WANTS 7 OFFICERS NEXT YEAR

Chief Press said he would present a budget request soon to add 7 officers next year and 14 more within the next five years.

Press: "We do spend a lot of time out there (outside city limits)."

I totally support pulling out of the 3 mile police jurisdiction. Just because the city CAN police that area doesn't make it the right choice to actually DO it. If folks outside the city want police protection, then they can be annexed in. I chose to live in the city for city services. Those outside the city should't also be entitled to the same services.

Marcus, many of these residents in Montrose are annexed in to the city. Does a police officer keep a map in his car showing which houses are in and which are out?

As far as those south of town, I am not sure about their status. Most likely many of them are not.

It scary when I hear politicians say spending our money doesn't matter to them. That sounds the same as your Obama.
