Fairhope Rotary Club Using Old Alternative School

FOR SUMMER ENRICHMENT ACADEMY PROGRAM
Alternative School

The Fairhope Pt. Clear Rotary Youth Club is using Baldwin County's former Alternative School building (corner Twinn Beech Rd. and Section St.) for its Summer Youth Program.

The rotary club has expressed an interest in moving into the unused building permanently: its Young St. facility being too small.

Councilmember Debbie Quinn said she had helped arrange the use of the facility recently with School Superintendent Dr Alan Lee:

"Back in April during Spring Break, I met with Superintendent Lee to discuss the future of the Fairhope K Center, Intermediate, Alternative and Point Clear Schools....he was interested in partnerships to keep these buildings from falling apart and to cut down on their upkeep expense. I met with Charles Durgin and two of his staff members to dicsuss where they'd like to head with the idea of using the old Alternative School site. They immediately told me that they had been wanting to use it for their summer program but the school had asked them to look at using the old Intermediate School site...which was not going to work out. We also discussed their growth and potential to use that site in their future. We met with the Youth leadership, city administrator, ass't Police Chief at the site and discussed with school representatives how the city could use the building. From those discussions, we were told that they would try and work something out. About a month later the Youth Leadership and the city had not heard back from the school about future ideas....at least for their summer program. I contacted Superintendent Lee and asked where things stood....he got back with me a few days later and said it was a go for them to use the site for their summer program."

this would certainly give the kids more room and possibly able to increase the size of students in the after school program

Is it safe to put schools so close to the dump?
