Amick/Ripp Family Compound Gated Off (Updated)

Ripp Compound
PUBLIC RIGHT OF WAY BLOCKED

A public (county)  cul de sac at the end of High Ridge Rd. has been gated off at the residence of frequent government critic and self-described dissident Paul Ripp; and his ex-wife Carolyn Amick (the owner of the property).

COUNTY ORDERS GATE REMOVED

The county recently had ordered the gate be removed -- or a vacation sought from the County Commission (which Amick is now seeking from the Commission).

CITY WANTS ITS UTILITIES RELOCATED FIRST

The city of Fairhope has said it does not object to the vacation, but only if the applicant agrees to re-locate "all Fairhope utilities" to the public right of way outside the gate (water).

The city is also asking the 4 lots on the gated cul de sac be combined into one--  to conform to city Subdivision Regulations (must front on public right of way).

No easements are to be granted, according to the city's letter.

JUST REMOVING GATE CALLED TOO EXPENSIVE

The owner/applicant Amick, says in the application letter that one reason for requesting the vacation is that  taking down the gate would be a financial burden; also she said the gate was necessary because she has dogs on the property as well as a 2 year old child (needed for safety).

According to public records, a family business is located there: Amick Ripp Consulting Inc.
Amick Ripp Inc.

The matter will be taken up at the County Commission's July 26th work session and their regular Aug. 2nd Commission meeting.

(Publisher's Note: Last year, Mr. Ripp filed an ethics complaint against Commissioner James's business partner (Pittman) for alleged wrongdoing during the BP oil spill clean-up; and sued the City of Fairhope in 2009 for alleged mistakes during the construction of the near-by Publix project.  The ethics case was dismissed by the Ethics Commission and the Publix lawsuit is scheduled for trial Sep. 6th.)

I can understand the city wanting their meters on the public right away but this property as I understand it is not in the city so why should the subdivision come into this

The city's subdivision regulations extend into its police jurisdiction, 3 miles beyond city limits.
