Council Starts Investigation Into Police Issues

APPOINTS SPECIAL INVESTIGATOR

Using the authority granted it by state law, the city council appointed Fairhope resident Lorenzo Howard to investigate ongoing personnel problems within the police department. Howard has extensive personnel-related experience according to Councilman Lonnie Mixon.

Howard holds a BS degree in psychology from Hope college and a Masters of Management degree from Aquinas College (Michigan). He is also a certified teacher, according to his resume.

OFFICERS RAISED CONCERNS

The Mayor and Councilman Ford met last month with a group of about 6 officers at a fire station to hear their complaints.

Chief Press has said the breakdown occurred when the Mayor  prevented him from disciplining certain officers: one reportedly found sleeping on duty 4 times.

Mixon said later he expects the results of Howard's investigation to be made public.
