Manhole Covers Being Stolen From City Streets

OLD BATTLES SUBDIVISION

City Administrator Mims reported that about 35 manhole covers had recently been stolen from subdivisions south of town.

Assistant Police Chief Sanders said marking the city's covers would not help since there is no law requiring junk yard owners to check the ID of those selling such items for scrap -- as is the case with copper.

Sanders said thieves often load up junk cars with such heavy items, just to increase their weight on scales.
