Noise Ordinance Limit to be Changed Again?

LOWER LEVEL PROPOSED

Fairhope City Councilman Mike Ford proposed an ordinance to reduce the maximum permitted daytime sound level from 85 to 65 decibels. Nighttime limit to remain at 50 db.

BUSINESS OWNERS OBJECT

The owners of downtown's Windmill Market (Mac Walcot) and the HWY 27 Grill (on HWY 181) objected to the change; Walcot suggested the "one size fits all" approach wasn't working: the limit may need to be different in the various parts of town.

DELAYED UNTIL NEXT MEETING

The council decided to delay consideration of the proposal until its next meeting.

what is wrong with this council, why are you catering to a few complainers yes complainers, to most of the people who live in Fairhope...I have a problem with this issue keeping coming before the city meetings and wasting tax payers money, I have gone to the meetings and have heard the people of Fairhope speak on keeping the ordinanced where we can enjoy our outside entertainment... I cant wait to vote for the next city election...

In Fairhope's form of government, a mayor may veto any ordinance the city council passes; then the council may override his veto by 2/3 votes (in our case, 4 votes are needed).

The average lawn mower produces 85-95 decibels. This sort of limit-setting nonsense is beyond ridiculous.

Mike Ford's proposed ordinance has no fact-based justification for his recommendation level of sound decibals in any way improving a single citizen'x quality of life! The complainers will not be satisfied and the majority of people who would like to enjoy outside entertainment want the level to remain where it is. I am extremely disappointed that a councilman whom I previously admired could be so stupid as to try to appease the small number of complainers. Mike Ford, you will not be re-elected!!
