Fairhope Employees Get Pay Raises

 COUNCIL VOTES ONE TIME INCREASE                                                      

The city council has approved a "one-time" pay raise for city employees (243): by December 15th, full time employees will receive a lump sum of $900 and part time ones $100.

Council President Mixon said he had consulted with the mayor/Dept. heads and it was decided instead of the 2% across the board raise that had been budgeted for ($219,000) --  a lump sum would be more equitable for the city's lower-range wage earners, using the same amount of budgeted funds.

most workers in the private sector haven't had a pay raise since 2008 and we are all lucky to have jobs. anyone who says public employees are anything but overpaid, underworked and spoiled isn't in touch with reality. these people are lucky to have secure jobs, retirement, vacation/sick days and no fear of being let go (let alone a city manager try to tell a city worker that they have to take less pay just to keep a job, as is done in the private sector all the time and see how quickly the crying starts)let alone a bonus for some unknown reason...

here is a novel idea...instead of giving a bonus to city workers, how about using that money to pay down debt or lower taxes / fees or quite frankly anything to "give the taxpayer a bonus"? this is OUR money and not for the city council to give out less than a year from elections.

Here's what I want you to do...the next time your power goes out, or you have a bad water leak, or you request a special trash pickup, I want you to tell the employee that comes to your house that he/she is overpaid, underworked, and spoiled. Somehow I get the feeling that your courage ends at your keyboard...

You people talking about not getting pay raises or bonuses in the private sector must not be very good employees. Or maybe you just do not know how to negotiate. I told my boss that I deserved a pay raise and I got it because I have shown I am too valuable to lose. He knows losing me means losing mega $$$
