Members of the Fairhope Police Explorer post were introduced to the Citizen's Police Committee recently by its leaders: officer Bunky Bishop and reserve officer Alan Bishop.

Bishop said membership has risen from 6 last year to 12 now.

Chief Press said he helped form a similar group in Miami (one of its members eventually became a Captain there); and he was enthusiastic when the idea to start one here was brought to him, about 2 years ago.

Press: "If we get one kid who becomes a police officer ... we've been successful."

Press said the explorers ride with officers on patrol and help with special events such as traffic control at football games; they also attend national competitions, demonstrating vehicle stops, investigations, DUI's, checkpoints and "everything an officer does" including fire arm training and self defense.

Victoria Hughes was introduced as this year's Explorer post Sergeant.

Officer B Bishop and Reserve Officer A. Bishop are certainly two excellent officers who will aide in their law enforcement knowledge

Actually, Bill Press has it wrong again. The FPD Explorer post was founded in 2004/2005 with Sergeants Andrew Har and Brady McLaughlin leading the squad. Cpl Craig Sawyer (now Sergeant) was the full-time officer/adviser. To my knowledge, both Har and McLaughlin went on to become law enforcement officers.
