Federal "Restore the Gulf Act" Endorsed by Fairhope City Council

The city council unanimously endorsed the Restore the Gulf Act now before the U.S. Congress. The Act would require that 80% of the environmental fines that may be incurred as a result of last year's BP oil spill be directed to gulf states.

Councilmember Quinn noted the resolution applied to the Senate version only (co-sponsored by Senators Shelby and Sessions) -- and that Daphne, Orange Beach, Gulf Shores and the County had already passed a similar resolution of support.

The fines could total up to $18 billion, according to published reports.

We'll never see that money here. Congress is bound to waste it all.
