Medical District Approved Around Thomas Hospital

ordinance
ENCOURAGES MEDICAL-RELATED DEVELOPMENT

The city council adopted an ordinance establishing a medical overlay district around Thomas Hospital to "establish and provide for the logical expansion of medical office needs to accommodate the growing community and region."

Permitted uses are: medical offices; nursing homes; clinics; laboratories; funeral homes.

EFFECT ON EXISTING STRUCTURES DISCUSSED

Councilman Kingrea asked Planning Director Smith what would happen if an existing structure is damaged (referring to some metal storage buildings on Nichols Ave.).

Kingrea: " ... if a hurricane ... comes along ... blows somebody's (non conforming) building down ... can they build the same kind of structure back?"

Smith: "Yes sir, within a year." Smith said the storage buildings would actually have 2 years to be rebuilt, because of their current industrial zoning designation.
