New Building Codes May Be Adopted

Fairhope, Alabama

Planning director Johnathan Smith is recommending the updated 2012 International Buidling Codes be adopted by the city.

Included is a provision requiring a sealed roofing system to reduce wind-driven rain damage during storms. The new provision could add about $1,000 to the cost of (roof) construction according to Smith.

Baldwin county has already adopted the new codes.

This is overkill. It drives the cost of construction up and makes home ownership out of reach for many.

Is the city getting in the insurance business? Can I get my home owners through them? What business of theirs what type of roof I put on? They aren't the ones paying for it.
