Chief Bill Press says the police department has in storage many lost bicycles that have been found -- or recovered during investigations. Press says some of them are quite valuable -- and is urging anyone who is missing a bicycle to come by to inspect them.
Also, the department has a program where citizens may register the serial numbers of their bikes, in case of such loss or theft.
Press said there is no time limit for keeping the lost bicycles -- but something will eventually have to be done with them -- due to lack of storage space. Press has mentioned possibly using them as free transportation for visitors at "bike stations" strategically placed around town -- if liability and maintenance issues can be resolved.
