Police Officer of the Month Named

Fairhope, Alabama

FOR APRIL 2012

Officer Eugene May has been named Officer of the Month for responding to a shooting that caused  the death of a 5 year old girl and the wounding of her 3 year old brother.

According to Chief Press, May was responding to an unrelated call on HWY 181 when he heard a gunshot nearby,  and -- being the first officer on the scene -- found that 2 small children had been hit after a gun being handled by their half-brother discharged.

Press: "Despite the chaotic scene unfolding before you ... you facilitated the response ... insured first aid was administered ... while securing the crime scene."

"Your professionalism and focus in the face of overwhelming chaos possibly contributed to the 3 year old surviving his wound ...  . You are a credit to our Department and the entire law enforcement community."

Press added later that based on his 40 years of police experience, the deaths of children (homicides) are the hardest events police officers have to deal with.

Press: "They are very tough for us."
