Young Street Sidewalk Nears Completion

Fairhope, Alabama

A new sidewalk on the east side of Young St. extending from from the city limits southward down to Twin Beech Rd. is nearing completion. (The project is being handled by Baldwin County, since its outside the Fairhope city limits.)

District 2 County Commissioner Bob James told the Times the project is expected to be completed within 2-3 weeks. It is 100% funded via a $150,000 grant from the Federal Safe Routes to School program.

Only $96,000 0f the grant money is being used, according to James.

The Rotary Youth Club on the south end of Young Street has long advocated for a sidewalk there.

I like how grant money is considered "free" money for all these projects. Every last dime comes from our pockets, whether you call it a "grant" or welfare. The federal government is too big and has too much of our money...and can't even balance its own budget. Meanwhile, little state and community governments beg for scraps from the master's table in D.C.

The comment about
"free" money sounds like Bob James himself. I am surprised that the county even cooperated at all.
