Former Chief, Captain Apply For City's Top Cop Job

Fairhope, Alabama

BROWNING AND GRIFFIS

According to Mayor Kant, former Fairhope Police Captain Steve Griffis is one of the applicants to become the city's next Police Chief.

In 2009, Kant and Councilman Ford lobbied the former city council to select Griffis for the job then, but eventually supported Bill Press (after an extensive search by a citizens' search committee). Griffis, who had been suspended at the time for undisclosed disciplinary reasons,  decided instead to retire from the Dept. -- and has since been employed as a tribal police officer with the Poarch Creek Band of Creek Indians.

Former Chief Chris Browning told the Times recently he too has applied to return as Chief. He resigned from that job in 2006 to work in the Attorney Generals Office as chief investigator.

Mayor Kant told the Times he has received applications from all over the country, as far away as Oregon; and the application-process will continue until the end of the month.

Council member Brewer told the Times she is satisfied with the search-process so far.

Interim Police Chief Joe Petties has also applied to be permanent Chief.

By Alabama law, the city council selects who will be chief -- by majority vote.
