Highway 181 to be Widened Near Walmart

According to mayor Kant, plans are in the works to widen (3 lane) HWY 181 from Gayfer Ave south to the entrance to the Quail Creek subdivision  -- by adding a center lane for turning.

Kant said the project is to be entirely federally funded ($2 million); but the city may be asked to help in some way.

Kant: "This is to help us until state funding gets back on cycle (for the  eventual 4 laning of the road)."

Council President Burrell asked if there was any opposition -- and was told there wasn't.

Don Powell, a spokesman for the state highway department, told the Times later that the project is scheduled to begin in early 2013.

4 LANING DELAYED

Powell also said the 4 laning of 181 north of HWY 104 won't begin until 2016.

Wilson: "ALDOT is currently acquiring the Right of Way required to construct the next section of SR-181 from SR-104 to CR-64.  The project is currently scheduled to let to construction in late 2016."

The folks that have property there better get them a good lawyer, cause the government isn't going to give them squat for their land.

Nobody likes to see trees cut down for pavement to be laid but nonetheless Walmart is here in Fairhope and the traffic is a problem. I live on hwy 181 in this area and often have to wait up to 10 minutes for a break in traffic to pull out of my driveway. During peek hours the traffic going to walmart backs up past the area being widened. We live in the best small town around. The secret is out and it will continue to grow. I am glad to see local government responding appropriately and obtaining federal funding to do so.

While I hated driving to Daphne or Foley to go to Walmart, I really hated that they brought the Fairhope Walmart here. Yes, it brought business to a small town, but you know...why didn't they just sell one of the ALREADY DEVELOPED pieces of property with the dozens of "lease" signs in the windows that had no business there in the first place? Why not place it on a spot of land that was ALREADY near a 4 lane? I know Fairhope is doomed to grow and eventually become a 'Little Mobile'. More and more people will move here and the crime will rise with the population. It is the story of our lives. However, because of the people we elect into city council (or those who BUY their way in)....it is our own darn fault.

I live within a mile of that area and have not witnessed such traffic. There is no traffic problem there but widening the road now will help prevent such a problem from developing.
