Various Groups Seeking $1.2 Million From City Coffers

Fairhope, Alabama

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT FUNDS

Various organizations are asking the mayor and city council for donations totaling over $1.2 million  -- to come out of the city's community development fund account. The CDF is funded by the city's 3 utilities (via citizens' electric, water, natural gas bills).

Most of them are private 501(c) non profit organizations, with the notable exception of the Educational Advisory Committee which is a city council appointed committee -- formed last summer to find ways to supplement the local Baldwin County Schools.

ALREADY REDUCED BY $375,000

The EAC requested $750,000 for that purpose; but the city council has already decided to reduce that amount by half.

NOTABLE REQUESTS

Education Advisory Committee: $750,000 (only $375,000 budgeted for)

Rotary Youth Club: $278,000 (for new classrooms at the Young St. Youth Club)

Pirate Booster Club: $50,000

Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce: $41,000
